EPIC- Early Prevention Impacts Community

Non profit organization that was formed to address the issue of youth substance abuse in the community. The EPIC Coalition works for community change to reduce substance use among youth ages 12-20. Programs include EPIC Schools for a safe and healthy school community, Prescription Drug Take Back program and EPIC Pals. EPIC Pals program pairs youth with rescue dogs and adult volunteers. Using an animal-centered, social-emotional learning curriculum young people are paired with rescue dogs and learn how to use positive reinforcement techniques to teach their dog basic manners and tricks. Program lasts 6-8 weeks. Also provides the Lens Program. Students are provided a camera to take photos in order to learn concepts of photography. Program uses photography to teach perspective, awareness, story telling and emotions. Program series ends with an exhibit of student’s photographs. Program also provides parenting classes on a continuing schedule. Classes are free, open to the public and can fill court or Children’s Division requirements. Each course is 5 weeks but participants can join at any time. Completion is successful when 5 classes have been taken. Classes are held every Tuesday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain in Cape Girardeau. Visit the website at https://www.epicprevention.org/
