Habitat for Humanity
Mission of Habitat for Humanity is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat offers mortgages that are at zero interest. The applicant is expected to be able to work on their home, make a down payment, and make monthly payments that include taxes and insurance. Requirements: Need for shelter – Applicant must demonstrate a need for housing and are currently living in overcrowded, temporary, or substandard housing; or be at risk of losing housing for any reason.
Willingness to partner – Applicant must complete specified amount of “sweat equity” hours of construction on other homes, as well as their own home.
Ability to pay – Applicant must have a steady source of income and can demonstrate financial responsibility. Habitat for Humanity will sell the house at cost of land and materials. Applicant will have an interest free loan repayable over twenty-five years. Average monthly payments include homeowners insurance and property taxes.
Household income guidelines apply. If credit improvement is needed, Habitat can assist potential home owners with credit repair assistance.
RE-Store: Accepts contributions of new and gently used building materials, furniture, cabinets and any other related items from individuals, contractors, and retail supply stores. Merchandise at the Re-Store is sold at a lower cost than retail prices. Re-Store is open to the public and contributors are provided a donation receipt for their donation. Restore is located at 501 S. Kingshighway, Cape Girardeau.
Additional programs available for those that are homeless or facing eviction. Programs work to help those that are homeless obtain permanent housing or to prevent homelessness by helping with eviction relief. Income guidelines apply. Must have some form of income to continue paying rent after obtaining the housing.
